Billy (Stockton, CA) Opened his own PC repair store, he has no debt things but things have been slow and looks like they may have to close up shop and is looking for advice on how to stop his failing business.

  • You don’t need a store front to be successful in PC repair save the money each month and lose the store front.
  • Marketing Plan:  You need to brand yourself in a way that spreads virally, create a Twitter account and a domain called “Ask Billy” and promote yourself as the most helpful person in the area to get a quick answer.
  • Refer A Friend program: Create a Purple Cow type postcard / business card (include a picture of you, maybe your philosophy and who you are as a person, tell your story) on the back have it say, Refer A Friend “I’ve used Billy’s services and he does a [BLANK] job.  I highly recommend you to give him a call” like a Mad Lib.  Give these to your customers asking them to hand them out and if one is claimed they will receive one hour of free service.
  • $50 an hour seems too cheap, once you get busy you may need to raise your fee but grandfather your existing customers in or give them a discount.

Joe used to be in the PC repair business, he made over sized post cards and set them to affluent neighborhoods and marketed himself as the businessman that helps businessmen with their PC problems.  He also thinks it is important to charge a flat fee so customers would how much it was going to cost them up front.

    Thank you for your comments, I think you are both right spot on with your advice.
  • I would echo the same as @Rob. I would also suggest looking into expanding into IT and networking systems for small and mid-sized businesses. Many small companies do not have an in-house IT dept. I would also look into the retail and hospitality markets-they have a strong need for 24 hour on-site support.

    Another suggestion I would make to anyone going at it alone is to join a networking group. I belong to a great one in New Jersey called EANJ that continually refers my Web Design and Search Marketing business great leads very often. It is a significant commitment of time and money but well worth it. Good Luck!

    Please don't take this out of context, but perhaps there isn't enough demand for your business. Back when PCs were $3000 and were hard to manage there was plenty of room and demand for PC repair. Now that PCs are typically > $700 (and some as low as $300), and much easier to manage, the demand for services like yours is greatly decreased. I'm not suggesting you drop the business line completely, just diversify.

    For example, could you add data recovery to your service suite? Every day I hear a story on how someone loses a lifetime of pictures on their PC, but was too cheap (or lazy) to have a decent backup solution and is now willing to pay $500 - $1000 to get their data back from that $300 computer.
