Ask Jason, I’m graduating soon, should I learn from a great entrepreneur or learn on my own?

Travis Fisher will be graduating soon with a Masters in Software Engineering, he and a friend started ECStageArt they make custom drum heads, guitar amp grills, backdrops, scrims and road cases for touring bands and other applications.  He also started KeyMinor which is an online knowledge exchange for people who play, perform and record music.  Lastly he recently started HowToPlaySong which is a sister site to KeyMinor and is meant to allow users to get expert help learning how to play songs.  Recognizing that most of these endeavors lack scalability he wants to get more involved in a startup and wants to know should he jump in feet first with his own startup or go work for another startup to learn more.

As a follow-up I contacted Travis about his segment and he had one additional question that he hoped the community would give some input.  He understands that the LaCrosse, WI isn’t the meca of tech but for other lifestyle type startups (ie. music industry) do you think it is feasible to be based elsewhere (ie. not LA, NY, SF)?

To be honest... if you need to ask the question, it is probably best to work for someone else. Running your own venture takes an almost naive determination and any doubt will kill your potential. I would work for someone else if you have any doubt about moving forward on your own project.
  • It's possible to be successful anywhere if you have a passion for what you're doing and work smart and hard.
